Pacific Rim

Yes, a blog about a movie.

Going to the cinema can be such an expensive date option nowadays but for us as a couple it's worth it. We both enjoy going to the movies as well as the snacks that usually come with it.

Having said that, I came up with the idea to really milk the experience for all it's worth by writing and perhaps even preaching a message on it at some point.

So here's my initial impressions/insights from the movie.

One. That was probably the longest introduction to a movie that I have ever seen. Which reminds me of a lot of the messages that I used to preach early on. I struggled majorly in my introductions. I even remember one of my good friends telling me how long it took for my message to take off. I used to explain that I was more like a diesel engine rather than a race car which goes from 0 to 100 in less than 10 seconds. A long intro can drag a movie, but this one was justified. Which leads me to point two.

Two. Beginnings. I really thought the movie would start or be all about how the aliens came to earth and how humans created robots to battle against them. That could have been a whole movie altogether. Instead they squeezed all of that in the introduction.Which means that given a chance to tell a story, the director believed that there was more to the story than the beginning. He could have made a two part movie but instead he chose to tell the second part and just make the first part just a lengthy introduction.

Three.Story versus big budget action. In a movie this magnitude it would have certainly been possible to simply make it about the action sequences. The battle scenes in the movie were certainly epic. However, the build up of the characters was equally important. There were multiple stories that were told and it was good that there was a certain development not just in the main character but the minor characters as well. I did feel though that despite being the major character, I felt little connection the main guy character. It actually seemed to me like the movie somehow focused on the side of the female character towards the end.

Four. Relationships. Brothers. Father and Daughter. Father and Son. Co-workers. These were the main relationships that were delved into and explored in the movie. I believe that was a great approach. Because once the audience is invested in these relationships, the possibility of them developing or terminating means that in the end the audience cares about what happens to them.

Five. One liners. At the moment I can only remember one: It's not obedience, it's respect.

So that's it for now. I'm still thinking how to work this in for a message of some sort.

I feel as though I'm not yet finished with this movie.
